Elephants have damaged more than 12 houses in the Triyuga Municipality area of the district.

From Sunday to last night, elephants entered the village at night in Triyuga-5 Bagchauri, Triyuga-6 Mohanpur and Lalpata, Triyuga-7 Chuhade Belauri areas and damaged more than 12 houses.

On Monday night alone, a group of about 70 elephants destroyed the houses of Brihaspati Sada, Bishnu Bhujel, Mohan Karki, Rudra Pokharel and other locals of the town.

Locals said that the elephants that came in a group on Tuesday night damaged the houses of Binda Karki, Raj Karki and other locals of Ward No. 6 Mohanpur. Locals said that in Lalpata of Ward No. 6 and Jogidaha of Ward No. 1, the elephants ate the food stored in the houses and destroyed the houses.

Krishna Karki of Mohanpur, Triyuga-6, said that locals have started staying at night by lighting fires for safety after elephants started coming in groups of 70-75 at night, entering the village and eating food, and destroying houses. 'Some locals' houses have been completely damaged, while others have been partially damaged and destroyed,' he said.

After elephants started entering the village and causing trouble, the District Police Office has urged locals to be careful at night and stay in groups in safe places.

The police are 'micking' locals and urging them to be aware and take necessary precautions, said District Police Office Chief Rajan Chapagain. 'Since elephants can only be driven away by scaring them away, we are urging them to stay in groups and drive them away. The police have also planned to patrol at night in coordination with the locals to prevent elephants from entering the village,' he said.
