What you should know

The Asara Correctional Center, which is being run by Nepal Police in Dharan-6 Panbari, has not only been limited to being a treatment center in the last six years, but has also witnessed the life journey of 1,807 youth who have returned from the darkness of addiction to the light.

In a context where drug addiction is affecting not only personal lives but also families and society, the center has been institutionalizing the campaign to make youth responsible citizens through rehabilitation for seven years.

Speaking at the center's seventh annual celebration and general assembly program on Thursday, Nepal Police Wives Association President Navina Khatri Karki said that falling into drug addiction unknowingly or under the influence of friends is a sad situation. She expressed the view that since drug addiction has a negative impact on individuals, families, society and the nation, joint efforts of all classes, communities and organizations are indispensable against it. According to her, only through coordinated practice of treatment, counseling and rehabilitation can those who are addicted to drugs be brought back to life sustainably, and she said that the Asara Rehabilitation Center is playing an important role in this.

Established on Chaitra 1, 2075, this center initially started its service with one drug user. Today, it has made 1,655 people from Koshi, 135 from Madhes, 14 from Bagmati, 2 from Sudurpaschim and 1 from India drug-free, including service recipients from all over the country. It is said that 95 people are currently undergoing treatment and counseling at the center.

Looking at the age group, 384 people aged 16 to 20, 807 people aged 21 to 30, 335 people aged 31 to 40 and 280 men above 41 have received treatment here.  The organization's report mentions that 925 people who used various drugs including marijuana, hashish, ice, tablets, alcohol, heroin and 466 people who used a single type of drug have been drug-free.

Acting President and First Vice President of Asara Correction Center, Shila Bajracharya, said that service recipients come here from various places in Koshi Province including Dharan, Jhapa, Morang, Hile and districts of Madhes Province. She claims that this has succeeded in establishing the Asara Correctional Center as a reliable rehabilitation center beyond the regional boundaries. She said that the center will be made more systematic and effective and the services will be expanded.

She informed that the provincial government has allocated budget for deep boring due to the water problem in the center. She emphasized that the role of treatment and rehabilitation centers should be made more effective in the coming days for drug-free individuals and building society.

In the program, letters of appreciation were presented to the center's employees and the members undergoing treatment who performed excellently in various sports. The members undergoing treatment publicly expressed their changes and confidence by performing songs and dances in the program. The program was attended by Nepal Police Wives, officials of the Provincial Police Wives Association, members of the board of directors, life members, Deputy Mayor of Dharan Sub-metropolitan City Aindra Bikram Begha, businessman Saroj Shrestha, ward chairmen, officials of security agencies and trainees.
