There is confusion in the implementation of the mango cultivation block development program to be launched in Dhankuta due to lack of effective coordination between the Agricultural Knowledge Center and the local level. Under the National Agricultural Modernization Project, the Agricultural Knowledge Center Dhankuta plans to run the mango block development program in an area of about 1,400 ropanis in the lower area of Chhathar Jorpati Rural Municipality.
The lower areas of Simbuwa, Banchare, Pathibhara, Piple, Karkale, Marse, Khamnera, Tamling and Haktikharka in Chhathar Jorpati Rural Municipality are potential for mango production, said Nagendra Rana, Acting Chief of the Agricultural Knowledge Center, Dhankuta.
The center had published a public notice on November 10 for the operation of the block program. But even after the 15-day deadline, Rana said that not a single application had been received from the Chhathar Jorpati Rural Municipality designated for the operation of the program.
Acting Chief Rana said that the Knowledge Center is preparing to extend the application deadline for a few days after the application was not received on the specified date. The office had called for proposals from farmer groups, agricultural cooperatives, water and forest users' committees, agricultural farms or companies for mango cultivation.
There are complaints that despite repeated information being sent to the rural municipality chairpersons and ward chairpersons for the operation of the mango block, the information has not reached the farmers of the village. Chhathar Jorpati Rural Municipality Chair Chhatra Bahadur Subba said that information has been sent to farmers and farmer groups through the agriculture department for the operation of the mango block. He said that further discussions are needed as a large area is required for the operation of the mango block.
Subba said that he is studying the possibility of expanding mango cultivation even in vacant community forests and will conduct a mango promotion program by providing seedlings and technical assistance.
The Knowledge Center has prepared to conduct this program in the lower areas of Chhathar Jorpati-3, 4 and 5. Ward No. 4 Chair Tek Bahadur Tamang said that there is confusion as the model for operating mango cultivation is not clear. He informed that he is understanding the investment model of farmers and government bodies and other technical issues for the mango block program.
A lot of land has become barren due to migration in the Simbuwa, Banchare, Pathibhara, Piple, Karkale, Marse, Khamnera and Tamling areas of Chhathar Jorpati Rural Municipality. The Knowledge Center is going to launch the Mango Development Block Program to bring the same land into use.
An industrial village has been built in this area to operate industries based on local raw materials. Similarly, a 23-kilometer blacktop road has also been extended from the Dhankuta district headquarters.
