Dhankuta Municipality is preparing to include climate change and disaster management in the local curriculum.

A curriculum is being prepared and included for the development of management skills and capacity to identify potential risks posed by climate change and to stay alert and safe at the school level. The curriculum will be implemented in grade 8 from the new academic session.

Dhankuta Municipality has stated that it is necessary to create awareness among children from the school level on how to deal with and manage the effects of climate change. The Information Officer of Dhankuta Municipality said that the curriculum is being designed to match local needs and geographical conditions.

First of all, there are preparations to add more by including a curriculum related to technology-based early warning systems. The local curriculum development committee formed in Dhankuta Municipality will decide what the curriculum will be on climate change and disaster management and how much the curriculum will be.

Laxmi Prasad Sapkota, coordinator of the local curriculum development committee of Dhankuta Municipality, said that only if climate change and disaster management are included in the curriculum, the necessary manpower for the future will be prepared.

He said that although it may seem normal to hear about implementing climate change and disaster management subjects in schools, it is a serious issue that cannot be ignored. Dhankuta Municipality is located in a risk zone for earthquakes, fires and floods.
