The citizens of Rong, Ilam, are in panic after a grave was dug up the same night a deceased person was buried. The body of local Ram Rai was dug up on Thursday night in Lamakteri, Rong Rural Municipality-2, in the district.
According to Ward Chairman Chandrashekhar Ghimire, after the death of Ram Rai, the 22-year-old son of Bal Kumar Rai, on Thursday, a grave was dug in a nearby land and the body was buried according to Kirat culture.
The locals were shocked after the grave was found in a 6-foot-deep pit with stones and soil removed to manage the body.
Local Sharna Rai said that the stones placed on top of the body were found dug up and placed around it. ‘According to Rai, when we reached the grave in the morning to give the body, we saw that the stones and soil above the body had been removed and a pit was made, such a sight was both surprising and scary,’ he said.
Locals say that this is the first time that a grave has been dug up like this in Rong on the night after a person was buried. The locals, public representatives and police who gathered there had drawn up a deed after finding the grave where the person was buried the previous day dug up the next day.
Ward Chairman Ghimire said that even though all the stones and soil were removed, the body inside the box was found intact. According to local Shailesh Ghimire, the 22-year-old Rai, who died the previous day, was disabled. The excavated grave was reburied on Friday.
Locals are demanding an investigation as this is the first and most mysterious incident in Rong.
