Of the 1,575 prisoners who escaped from Jhumka Jail in Sunsari on the night of August 23, 700 prisoners are still absconding. During the Gen-G movement, the protestors reached the prison on the night of August 23 and drove away the prisoners.

The prison, which was calm throughout the day, suddenly became tense at night. Because of the protest, on that day in the afternoon, after it was learned that prisoners had escaped from prisons across the country, the prisoners of Jhumka prison also escaped with the help of the protestors.

According to the prison administration, around 450 prisoners escaped from Block 'B' at 10.30 pm that day. The police administration had already been displaced and even though the army was informed, they did not arrive in time, so later 1,575 people managed to escape. After that, the police asked the fugitives to return immediately. Some were arrested by the army and handed over to the prison administration.

Jailer Subas Lamichhane informed that there are only 1,118 prisoners in the prison. According to him, most of the 700 absconders are prisoners who are serving their lives in prison for extortion cases. The administration asked the prisoners who escaped and were out of touch to return to the prison by October 20. But Jailer Lamichhane said that most of the prisoners did not return to the prison. The prison administration has estimated that some prisoners returned after celebrating Dasain and some prisoners may return after Tihar and Chhath festivals.

Jailer Lamichhane said that most of the prisoners who escaped were criminals-minded. Jhumka Prison, which is considered to be the third largest prison in the country after Kathmandu and Birganj Prisons, has two blocks namely 'A' and 'B'. There were 1,799 prisoners in both blocks of the 1,600-capacity prison.
