An electric crematorium has been constructed at Kankai Ghat in Kankai Municipality-4 of Jhapa.  With the help of the Koshi State Government, Kankai Municipality and various donors, the construction of an electric crematorium has been completed on the east bank of the Kankai River at a cost of 23 million.

In the electric crematorium, there is an investment of 2 crores by the Koshi state government, 20 lakhs by the municipality and 10 lakhs by various donors. Chief of Kankai Municipality Rajendra Kumar Pokharel informed that an agreement has been reached with the provincial government to operate the electric crematorium in Kankai Municipality.

'We have made a procedure for the operation of the crematorium,' he said, 'We are preparing to operate it properly within a week.' Gopal Kharel, General Secretary of Kankai Ghat Management Committee and Coordinator of Electric Cremation House Infrastructure Construction Committee informed that the Indian technical team has returned after completing the construction of the electric cremation house.

He said that the body of 80-year-old Hemti Rajwansi of Panthapada, Jhapa Rural Municipality was cremated during the examination on 27th July. He said it takes about 50 minutes to cremate a dead body in an electric crematorium. He said it would take three to three and a half hours to cremate the body using firewood.

In the budget of the Koshi state government in the fiscal year 2081/82, a budget of 20 million was allocated for the construction of an electric crematorium in the Kankai river in collaboration with the local level. With the completion of the construction, the demand raised from the local level for the construction of an electric crematorium in the Kankai River has been addressed.

Established in the year 2067, Kankai Ghat currently has five crematoriums in operation. It is said that after the operation of the electric crematorium, firewood used in cremation and time will be saved, which will also help in environmental protection.
