The tea workers have closed four tea plantations in the district with various demands. They staged a protest saying that the demands of the workers were not met as stipulated in the Labor Act.

The workers have gone on strike at Gaurishankar, Riddiganesh, Surya and Naaz tea estates in Mechinagar in Bhadrapur. The central president of Nepal Tea Coffee Workers Union, Sant Kumar Rai, said that workers have stopped work in Gaurishankar, Riddiganesh and Surya Tea Estate since July 18 and in Naz Tea Estate from Tuesday. He said that this strike process will gradually increase in other gardens of the district as well.

Section 116 of the Labor Act 2074 has given workers the right to make collective demands. Accordingly, at the end of Baisakh, the workers made a demand to the plantation manager covering various issues. Within 21 days of the worker making the demand, the concerned establishment should call a negotiation and resolve the issue. If the demand is not heard, the party making the demand has the right to go to the labor office,' said Rai. But, that didn't happen either.'

According to him, the Labor Act 2074 does not cover the permanent relationship of workers. In Section 4 of the Labor Act 2048, there was a provision to make workers permanent after reaching 240 days. The current law does not have that provision. Now if a laborer works only for one day, he should get service facilities," he said. "The permanent arrangement has disappeared."
