72 people have died due to elephant attacks in Jhapa during a decade and a half. In this process, seven non-Nepali people have also died since 2067.
According to Dr. Suman Bhal of Division Forest Office, Jhapa, 92 people were injured in elephant attacks during the same period. Since July 2081, five people have been killed and 6 injured in elephant attacks. Looking at the statistics of the last 15 years, it seems that on average five people died every year. To reduce human-elephant conflict in
district, activities such as electric fencing, construction of biological paths, construction of ponds in forest areas, planting of fruit trees, and patrolling have been taking place. Dr. Lilanath Sharma of 'Forest Action Nepal' says that human-elephant conflict cannot be reduced by electric fencing alone. 'Elephants cannot be stopped by fences alone,' he said, 'Improvements are necessary in the forest.'
He said that if we can create a biological path for elephants, create an elephant-friendly environment in the forest and improve the forest, forest-elephant conflict can be reduced. Since elephants go out of the forest in search of food, it seems that it is necessary to manage the diet of elephants in the forest. Along with encroachment of forests, human settlements are increasing near the forests, so the conflict between elephants and elephants is increasing.
Because elephants like corn, elephants come from India at the time of corn cultivation, Division Forest Office Dr. Bhall said. According to him, the movement of elephants is more during the corn season than at other times.
25 elephants died
25 elephants have been found dead in Jhapa since 2062. Lately, there has been an increase in the death of elephants in the district. In the past, one or two elephants were found dead every year. However, the death rate of elephants has increased in recent years.
from July 2080 to June 2081 four The elephants were found dead and four elephants have been found dead in the current season as well, according to the Division Forest Office.
