There has been an increase in the number of dolphins in Koshitappu Wildlife Sanctuary. According to the Reserve Office, the number of dolphins listed as protected mammals by the National Parks and Wildlife Protection Act 2029 has reached 22.

25 dolphins have been recorded this year, the office announced on Thursday the results of the dolphin census conducted this week in Koshi River and Koshitappu Wildlife Reserve. Bhupendra Prasad Yadav, senior conservation officer of the reserve, informed that a total of 22 dolphins including 15 adults, 5 mid-adults and 2 children were recorded in the Koshi river and the reserve area from May 15 to 18. According to the reserve, 19 dolphins were recorded last year. Yadav said that due to river pollution and use of pesticides, lack of food for dolphins, dolphin conservation challenges have increased.

Koshitappu Wildlife Reserve, Bhimkali Gulm, National Nature Conservation Fund Koshi Conservation Center, Himalayan Prakriti, Koshi Bird Observatory participated in the count for four days. More than 18 volunteers, enumerators and experts are participating in the counting work, said Birendra Gautam, head of the Koshi conservation center of the National Nature Conservation Fund.
