In Mechinagar Municipalities-2 and 4, which are affected by elephants, local residents are in trouble after leopards started killing goats on a daily basis.

Ward president of Mechinagar-2 Deepak Baral informed that the leopard, which hides in the tea garden and family's private forest throughout the day, kills goats and pigs from the local's cages and eats them after evening. He said that Bahundangi, which has been facing the terror of elephants and monkeys for a long time, has had to face the terror of leopards for the last 15 days. "We who are facing the regular terror of elephants and the unnatural damage of monkeys, we have to do the same as leopards," says Baral, the ward president, "every day goats and pigs are being pulled out of their cages and eaten. Now there is concern about how to protect children.'

So far, more than two dozen goats and pigs have been killed and eaten by leopards. He said that workers working in local tea plantations, people walking in the morning and evening and school children are scared of possible attacks by leopards. "Until now, only goats are being killed," he said. He informed that a trap has been set in an iron cage to control the leopard as the fear of human loss has also increased.

He has also appealed to the division office Jhapa, organizations and individuals working in the field of wildlife to take immediate action to control leopards in this area through social media. He claimed that there are two or more adult leopards in this area.

Two months ago, even in Mechinagar-4 Bahundangi, a leopard killed a dozen goats of local people. Ward President Arjun Kumar Karki informed that even though they brought iron cages from the Jamnukhadi Community Forest in Kankai and set traps, they have not been able to control the leopard so far.

Bharat Babu Shrestha, the head of Division Forest Office, said that although leopards kill animals, there are no human casualties. He said that because the leopard is a moving animal, it may have lived in the border area of Ilam Jhapa.

Seven years ago, a leopard appeared in this area. Ward president Karki said that the leopard was taken into custody by putting it in a cage. As there is a wildlife reservation center in the bordering Indian area near Bahundangi, sometimes wild animals come wandering from there. Nigale tigers and gauri cows were also found in Bahundangi in the past.
