In the under construction Nepal-China Friendship Industrial Park spread in Gauradah and Kamal areas of Jhapa, the maize cultivation of Indian citizens is currently flourishing.
After Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli laid the foundation stone four years ago, Indians have been cultivating maize illegally on 300 bigha of land where construction has stalled.
The local government is unaware of the maize farming done by Indians. Damak municipality-10, Gouradah municipality-5 and Kamal rural municipality-7 park area around Ratuwa river now looks green with corn. This land has been acquired by the government by spending one billion 22 million rupees.
The local government is unaware of how Indians cultivated corn on the land acquired by the government. Chhatrapati Subedi, Mayor of Gauradah Municipality, says, "It is a serious matter that foreign citizens have come to cultivate corn on the land that has come under the name of the government.
With the involvement of Indian citizen Feroze Khan, people were invited from India to cultivate corn. According to Krishna Bahadur Pun, the information officer of Industrial Zone Management Limited regarding illegal maize cultivation, he says that they are aware of maize cultivation and are preparing to send a technical team to study it.
The police team led by Shivprasad Subedi, head of the locality administration office Gauriganj, has already confirmed the illegal cultivation. However, the local government and administration have not been able to take concrete decisions about corn farming.
The planting of maize by Indian citizens in the industrial park, which is said to be a symbol of Nepal-China friendship, is not just a matter of land encroachment. This is also a serious matter from a geo-political point of view. Located within 20 km of Nepal-India border area, this land is a strategic area of India.
Experts say that this incident indicates that India's economic and social influence is expanding. Corn cultivation by Indians in Chinese industrial park under construction. Photo courtesy: Dickesh Lama
