Shivasatakshi Municipality has banned the sale of formalin-treated fish. Narmaya Karki, deputy head of the municipality and coordinator of the monitoring committee, informed that the sale and distribution of fish was banned after the public complaint that formalin, a chemical considered harmful to human health, was used to make fish look fresh for several days.

"The sale of fish that has been treated with formalin, which is harmful to health, can cause fatal diseases like cancer," she said.

The chief administrative officer of the municipality, Sunita Tumwahamfe, said that the municipality is regularly monitoring the market in cooperation with the local market management committee and the local police to prevent the sale and distribution of formalin-used and dead fish.

Indicating that there have been complaints about dipping fish imported from India in formalin solution to prevent them from rotting, she said that the sale of dead fish has been strictly enforced to prevent this. The municipality has issued a public notice to inform the municipality immediately if it is known that the harmful chemical formalin is used and dead fish are sold.

Five years ago, Jhapa's Birtamod Municipality has banned the sale and distribution of formalin-treated fish. Consumers have been demanding that the sale of dead fish imported from India should be banned as fish farming in Jhapa is encouraging and local production is enough to meet the consumption.

President of Consumer Awareness Campaign Jhapa Shalikram Bhattarai said that the use of formalin chemicals is very dangerous from the point of view of human health and it is necessary to discourage its use not only in fish but in any food.

He said that the decision of Virtamod and Shivasatakshi municipalities to stop the sale and distribution of formalin-treated fish is welcome and that regular monitoring is necessary with the help of representatives of consumer organizations and a team of experts for full implementation.
