Although the production of oranges has decreased compared to last year, the farmers of Eastern Hills are excited due to the increase in prices. Traders say that orange production has decreased by 20 percent this year compared to last year.

Although the production is less, the price in the market has increased compared to last year. Currently, farmers are bringing oranges from eastern hilly districts including Khoku, Chintang, Budhuk, Bhojpur in Dhankuta to the agricultural produce market in Dharan.

The Managing Chairman of Dharan Agricultural Market Management Committee, Lakshman Bhattarai, said that compared to the months of November and January last year, less amount of oranges were brought to the Dharan Agricultural Market. Pradeep Rai, a farmer of Bhojpur, said that due to the change in weather and heavy rains during the orange harvest this year, there was a decrease in production compared to last year.

He said, "In the past years, 15 to 20 metric tons of oranges were grown, but this year, only 12 metric tons of oranges were grown." He said that he has been trading oranges for the past 18 years. Two thousand five hundred metric tons of oranges have been sold in the Dharan agricultural market since the last week of November.

Bhattarai, Managing Chairman of Dharan Agricultural Market Management Committee, said that more than 25 tons of oranges are coming to the Dharan Agricultural Market on a daily basis. Oranges, which were sold at 70 per kg in Dharan agricultural market last year, are currently being sold at 100 to 200 per kg. The price of oranges fluctuates according to the season.

Traders say that the price of oranges increases when the sun is shining and the price decreases when the sun is not shining. According to the statistics of the agricultural produce market, last year, when 8,500 metric tons of oranges were sold in Dharan, the turnover was worth about one billion. This year, when five thousand metric tons of oranges are bought and sold, it is estimated that the turnover from the agricultural market will be around 600 million.
