Meat and alcohol-free mangsebung

There is a village in Elam where consumption of meat and alcohol is prohibited. In Mangsebung, where the Limbu community is in majority, only vegetarian food is served. Consumption of cigarettes, bidis, khaini and alcohol is prohibited. This is not a law made by the local government, the locals themselves are following it.

"If someone goes out and eats, they should go, but it is not allowed in the village", local elders  Kehersingh Yonghang said. According to him, even in the hotels and restaurants here, meat is not cooked and alcohol is not kept for sale. Locals claim that the people of that village, which is located in Ward No. 3 and 5 of Mangsebung Rural Municipality, do not consume prohibited substances even when they go out.

In that area where about one thousand five hundred families live, they never consume alcohol and meat. People here follow Kirat religion. According to locals, meat and alcohol are forbidden because of the belief that killing, violence and beatings should not be done after following that religion. Information about this has been given on the board at the entrance of the village.

Yonghang said that the village was declared a vegetarian village in 2072. According to him, it is not allowed to eat in the village and even when going outside, the locals of that area do not serve prohibited items. According to the Kirat Limbu language, it is believed that Mang means god and Sebung means the chosen place, i.e. the place chosen by God.

Locals say that the community following the Kirat religion is increasing recently. Those who follow this religion keep red and white flags on three bamboo poles from house to house. In addition, the sun-marked flag is also placed. It is considered as the Chinari of Larumba village in Mangsebung rural municipality.

Larumba village Kirant is the birthplace of religious leader Atmanand Lingden. Harmful things are prohibited in that area because of the residence of those who follow the same religion. It is a tradition that followers should not consume not only fish and meat, but also alcohol and tobacco cigarettes. Locals said that because alcohol is not consumed, there is not much noise and fighting.

You can't litter indiscriminately in the village. Also, it is not allowed to raise pigs, pigs and chickens. Chairman of Ward No. 3 Lakshuman Rai (Janam) said that local and foreign high-ranking people are also coming to the village to seek blessings from Kirat religious guru.
