Media workers of Sunsari have drawn the attention of Home Minister Ramesh Akhtar to the threatening statements made by Harak Sampang, the mayor of Dharan sub-metropolitan city, against journalists.

The Nepal Journalist Federation Sunsari handed over a letter of attention to the home minister who arrived in Dharan to participate in the program on Friday afternoon. Federation Sunsari Secretary Dhruv Dhakal said that when Sampang repeatedly made threatening statements against journalists, he drew the attention of the Home Minister saying that there was no working environment and journalists were unsafe. 

Presenting the attention letter, the former president of Nepal Journalist Federation Sunsari and senior journalist Harsh Subba asked the Home Minister to be serious saying that no action has been taken by the police administration even though the mayor of Sampang repeatedly threatened journalists.

While understanding the attention letter, the Home Minister said that he was in favor of the freedom of the press and mentioned that the press should be completely free in a democracy. Stating that democracy and the press are complementary to each other, he said that democracy will be alive when the press is free. A complaint has been lodged with the police against Mayor Sampang, who has been working against the rules and regulations. A complaint has been lodged at the local police office, Dharan, against Mayor Sampang, who threatened a journalist who wrote news about his work through social media.

After the meeting of Journalist Federation Sunsari, Nepal Journalist Federation Sunsari district president Janakrishi Rai and central councilor Gopal Dahal filed a complaint at the area police office Dharan demanding necessary action along with peace and security. On Wednesday, Sampang threatened Rai and journalist Dahal, president of Sunsari Federation of Journalists, through social media. Chairman Rai informed that they have lodged a complaint with the police demanding the safety of the journalists saying that they are unsafe due to their expression. In the complaint, immediate action has also been demanded against dozens of people, including author Rai, who made threatening 'comments' on social media.

Dahal wrote a news for investigative journalism center titled "Hark Sampang's silent regime in Bethiti's swamp". The news was published on November 14th in Ek Online. Aiming at the same news, Chief Sampang threatened through social media using profanity and profanity.
