Locals in Kepilasgadhi Rural Municipality-1 Fedi and Diktel Rupakot in Mazhuwagadhi Municipality-10 Patheka in the northern region of the district are engaged in conservation of the endangered red panda. Phungalung in Phedi, Kopche in Bagale Patheka and Merung Community Forests are local red panda conservation groups.

A Poaching Control Committee of 9 people has been formed for red panda conservation in Phungalung and Bagale Community Forests of Phedi. An 11-member Poaching Control Committee has been formed for red panda conservation in Kopche and Merung Community Forests of Patheka. Gyankumar Rai, a local scholar, said that the endangered red panda is protected because it helps the environment and promotes tourism.

A heralu has also been arranged for the protection of red pandas found in the community forests. Panchakeshar Rai and Omraj Rai in Phungalung Community Forest, Mingmar Sherpa and Bakhat Bahadur Rai in Bagale Community Forest, Tikaram Rai and Ramkumar Rai in Kopche Community Forest and Pushpalal Giri and Mani Prasad Rai in Merung Community Forest have been observed. 

The Red Panda Network and Janakalyan Samaj Nepal have also supported the locals involved in red panda conservation here. A community-based red panda conservation program has been conducted in collaboration with locals, Red Panda Network and Jankalyan Samaj Nepal. Under this, program officer Tejvinod Pokharel said that by studying and researching the red panda, various programs necessary for its protection have been conducted.

Four years ago, Kepilasgarhi Rural Municipality spent two lakhs and five years ago  Division Forest Office Khotang provided Rs 50,000. It made public awareness programs and hoarding boards and kept them in places.

Apart from this, three years ago Kepilasgarhi rural municipality-1 fedi was awarded to those who provided photos and videos of red pandas to protect red pandas. The local Panchkeshar Rai who provided the photo and video of the red panda found in the local Chhimalung Community Forest was rewarded with five thousand rupees.

According to local residents, the red panda found in Kepilasgarhi rural municipality-7 Sungdel was killed by poachers. Local Bhupindra Koyi Rai complains that there are red pandas in Sungdel's Dayalubma, Devikhark and Bungbunge community forests but they have been killed by poachers. Koyi Rai said, "Now, the red panda is gone because of the poachers," said Koyi Rai.
