There has been a delay in the construction of the permanent bridge over the Sharada River on the Bagchaur–Patihalna road section, which falls under the Madan Bhandari Highway in Bagchaur Municipality. The construction company has neglected the work, citing reasons such as material shortages, price hikes, and floods washing away construction materials, resulting in delays in the bridge construction.
Although the bridge was supposed to be completed within four years, only 70 percent of the work has been done even after five years have passed. After the first contract deadline expired in Ashad 2082, the deadline has already been extended twice. However, there is still no sign that the work will be completed within the extended period. In the absence of the bridge, locals of Bagchaur, Kotmaula, and Patihalna have been facing difficulties during the rainy season.
After the Infrastructure Development Office Salyan called for bids at the end of 2077, Prakritik Nirman JV was entrusted with completing the work for 36.2 million rupees. The contract to complete the bridge within four years was signed on Ashad 9, 2078, and the construction company began work. The bridge is 25 meters long.
Tek Bahadur Oli of Patihalna, Bagchaur–9, said that due to the contractor's negligence, the construction of the permanent bridge has already been delayed by a year beyond the scheduled time and is still not complete. He said that during the dry season, vehicles can cross, but during the rainy season, people are forced to walk. "Bagchaur Municipality has placed hume pipes over the Sharada River to allow vehicles to pass, but it is not very reliable. We have to risk using the old suspension bridge to ferry motorcycles," he said. "If someone in the village falls ill during heavy rains, we have to endure various hardships to take them to the hospital."
Ward Chairperson Yagyabahadur Dangi of Bagchaur–9 said that although the company is working now, the delay in the bridge construction was due to the lack of interest shown at the beginning. He said that after the Madan Bhandari Highway was connected, pressure increased from all sides, and the company constructing the highway also pledged to assist in building the permanent bridge, prompting the bridge construction company to resume work.
Siddhartha Mishra, Information Officer at the Infrastructure Development Office Salyan, said that the bridge could not be completed on time due to delays by the construction company in the past. He said that after the work was left in limbo for nearly two years, the construction company resumed work following repeated reminders from the office and mounting pressure from all sides.
According to him, the concrete casting of the 25-meter-long permanent bridge has been completed, but the construction of retaining walls on both sides of the river remains. He said the physical progress of the bridge construction is at 70 percent, and financial progress is at 45 percent. Dilli KC, the operator of the construction company, has said that the work will be completed and handed over by the coming Ashoj.
