After students started falling ill at Krinamoksha Secondary School in Jumla since last Thursday, a team from the Karnali Institute of Health Sciences has reached the school and returned after checking the health of the students.

Some students of this school have shown symptoms of crying, screaming, shaking and collapsing. A medical team was called after students from classes 6 to 10 suddenly started falling ill. More than 40 students of this school, which has a student population of 325, have fallen ill.

A team including Dr. Alok Shah, a doctor from the Karnali Institute of Health Sciences, and Nandaraj Acharya, a counselor, had reached the school. Principal Krishna Budha informed that a health check-up was conducted at the school and about three hours of counseling were provided.

‘The health of some sick students has improved due to counseling,’ he said, ‘Some are still sick.’

The medical team arrived on Monday morning and closely monitored every activity the students did when they were sick. Principal Budha said that even students who had shown some improvement after counseling fell ill again after the team returned. ‘Even after doctors and counselors were brought in from Dhamijhakri, the students did not recover completely,’ he said, ‘That is why the school has made preparations to give sick students a week’s leave.’

The students who were sick on the first day have been showing similar symptoms for three consecutive days. Counselor Nandaraj Acharya says that the students fell ill because they could not handle the mental stress. According to him, the patients were kept alone and given counseling. Group counseling continued for about three hours, but the health of the sick students did not improve. Two-three students who appeared to be in a very difficult situation have also been asked to be brought to the hospital.

They have suggested that the school do things ranging from doing yoga to providing counseling every day.

Along with the medical team, the Patarasi Rural Municipality Chairman and Vice Chairman visited the school and returned after observing the situation.
