Schools have started operating in Kanakasundari Rural Municipality of Jumla from today. Kanakasundari started classes from today after the federal government started the enrollment campaign from April 15 and issued a circular to start classes from April 21.

The executive meeting held on Sunday decided to start the schools from today, saying that the decision made by the federal government would affect the education sector. Acting chairperson Premkali Budha informed that the meeting decided not to give a holiday on Sunday as well.

‘The government had said that the school enrollment campaign would start from April 15,’ Budha said, ‘Since this would have a negative impact on schools in the Himalayan districts, we decided to start classes from Monday (today).’ Kanakasundari has become the first municipality among the eight local levels in the district to decide to start schools from April 7.

It is customary to give a holiday of 50 minutes in the Himalayan districts from Poush Pandhra to Magh 30. Since it is extremely cold, classes cannot even be held. ‘Holidays such as Dashain and Tihar are affecting education even more,’ she said. ‘Since the federal government’s decision is not beneficial in every way, Kanakasundari has decided to open the school by making a decision that suits them.’

The municipality had concluded that the teaching hours and curriculum would not be completed if the federal government’s decision was accepted. The principals, parents, teachers and students of all community schools have been informed that the school will be operated from today. The decision regarding the operation of the school made by the rural municipality has been welcomed by the locals.

The head of the education department of Kanakasundari rural municipality, Jeevan Bahadur Rokaya, said that the municipality was forced to start running the school after it was seen that the educational quality would deteriorate with the academic session set by the government. According to him, the village education committee had already decided to start teaching from Baisakh 1. However, he said that the circular from the federal government has come as a surprise. He said, "The decision to start teaching from today has been reached after looking at the government circular and the educational situation here."

"We have not disobeyed the federal government circular," said Education Chief Rokaya. "We have started teaching because that circular was seen as unfavorable in every way. Teaching has started not out of desire, but out of sheer will." Textbooks have also reached the school. There are 30 schools in Kanakasundari, including 3 child development centers, 7 secondary schools, and 20 basic schools.

Although discussions are underway at all local levels across the district to run schools at once, Kanakasundari Rural Municipality has stated that others have not shown much interest.
