The District Agricultural Development Office has implemented a potato promotion program in four municipalities to expand commercial farming. The program has been implemented in Bagchaur, Wangad Kupinde Municipality, Darma and Chhatreshwari Rural Municipality. The office has selected six individual firms, three groups and four cooperatives from four municipalities to expand potato farming. Under the program, farmers affiliated to groups, cooperatives and individual firms will expand potato farming on 25 hectares. More than 100 farmers will directly benefit from potato farming. Office Chief Mahesh Acharya said that the potato promotion program has been implemented to increase the income of farmers by expanding farming. He informed that farmers affiliated to groups, cooperatives and firms will be provided with agricultural tools including mini tillers and drums to help in potato farming, make canals for irrigation, provide technical assistance and provide training on potato production.
Nigalchula in Bangad Kupinde-12 and Bafukhola in Bagchaur-11 and 12 are famous for their production of winter potatoes. Winter potatoes are produced in all municipalities of the district. Last year, 52,300 metric tons of potatoes worth Rs 1.71 billion were produced in the district.
‘Out of which, potatoes worth Rs 290 million were sold outside the district,’ he said, ‘Farmers across the district have been earning good income by cultivating potatoes commercially in recent times.’
He said that farmers have been cultivating potatoes on 4,435 hectares in all municipalities of the district, including 2,705 hectares for summer and 1,730 hectares for winter.
