Pavita Oli of Garalabot, Banfikot Rural Municipality-3, has become deranged after losing her two daughters who went to a wedding reception. She has been struggling and fainting from time to time and has not been able to get her eyes to open.
Her two daughters, Kalpana and Urmila, who had gone to a wedding reception in a settlement across the river on Monday evening, were found dead on the bank of the river on Tuesday morning. According to her, around 5 pm on Monday evening, Kalpana, Urmila, along with her son Amrit and brother-in-law Sapana, crossed the suspension bridge over the Sanibheri river to attend a friend's wedding at Bhalkhola in Musikot Municipality-1, about an hour away.
At around 8 pm that same night, Kalpana, Urmila and Sapana returned from the wedding reception to their home, but did not reach their destination. The next morning, around 8:30 am, the bodies of Kalpana and Urmila were found on the river bank about 200 meters downstream from the house. Sapana is still missing.
Their brother, 18-year-old Amrit, who went with the deceased and the missing from home, said that he saw the sisters at the wedding house until 8 pm. ‘I did not see them there after 8 pm. I thought they must have come home and I returned with my friends around 12 midnight and slept at my friend’s. This happened in the morning,’ he said.
On Tuesday morning, villagers had informed the police after seeing the body on the river bank. The body was identified as Kalpana. And while inquiring about the other two people (Urmila and Sapna) who had gone with them, Urmila’s body was also found about 200 meters below. Sapna was not found.
After this, mother Pavita and her family, who lost their daughters, are in mourning, while Pavita’s brother-in-law’s daughter Sapna was still missing as of Thursday evening. Sapna's father Lok Bahadur and mother Dilsara have also become deranged. The postmortem of the deceased Urmila and Kalpana was conducted on Wednesday and the funeral was held on the same day. Relatives and police have been deployed near the river to search for Sapna.
13-year-old Urmila and Sapna were studying in class 6 at Tripura Secondary School in Musikot-1. 11-year-old Kalpana was studying in class 5 at Janhit Avi in the village. They had been commuting to and from school by crossing the bridge at the school across the river, about an hour's drive from their home, for a year. Therefore, this route was not new to them. Police say they were swept away by the river while crossing the river while returning from a wedding.
Police Inspector Hari Prasad Pun, Information Officer at the District Police Office, Rukum West, said that preliminary investigation revealed that they were swept away while crossing the river. "We have not seen any other reason to suspect anything from the scene of the incident to the condition of the body and other matters," he said. "Although the postmortem report is not final, the doctor has said that both of them died due to drowning." It is not clear why they crossed the river despite the presence of a bridge. Family sources have said that they used to cross the bridge while going to school.
Pavita had four children, three daughters and one son. Urmila is the third and Kalpana is the youngest. She said that her husband remarried two years ago and is no longer in touch with them. Meanwhile, Sapna's parents, who went missing, have appealed for help in finding their daughter. The police said that such incidents will remain in the police record and that the necessary investigation will continue, and that they will keep the victim's relatives in touch and that if any suspicious things are found, the investigation will be taken forward.
