Residents around Kalimati in Salyan have been confined to their homes due to fear of a man-eating tiger that has entered the settlement.

The fear has increased after the man-eating tiger attacked the settlements of Kalimati Rural Municipality-5, 6, 7 and Surkhet in the district, killing three people in a row.

The tiger attacks killed Gangadevi Sarumagar, 57, of Gerubani, Bheriganga-5, Surkhet on December 23, Dhansari Rawat, 42, of Kalimati-7 on December 25, and Chandra Bahadur Khaptadi, 65, of Hattidhunga, Kalimati-6 on December 28. Gangadevi and Dhansara were killed in the attack when they went to cut grass. Khaptadi was killed when he was returning from grinding flour from the mill.

The man-eating tiger is also killing the livestock of local farmers. The Nepal Army team deployed from the park has not been able to control the tiger. Due to this, the locals are scared. They have stopped leaving their homes due to fear. Locals of three wards have expressed their grief over the impact of their work outside their homes. The army team has not been able to control the tiger and the locals have even staged a protest, saying that the state has given priority to tiger conservation over lives.

They have urged the relevant bodies to immediately control the man-eating tiger. Not only that, the ward office and the municipality have written to the relevant bodies to kill the man-eating tiger to save the lives of the general public.

Himal Pun of Ghuiyabari, Kalimati-7, said that people have to hide inside their homes due to the tiger threat and form groups when they have to go out. He said that the tiger has killed three people and is killing and eating livestock daily. Ward Chairman of Kalimati-7, Mitralal Rijal, said that the tiger entered the settlement and put the lives of the locals at risk because the park did not arrange a fence in the border area. According to him, the Nepal Army team has searched for the tiger, but has not been able to find it yet.

The tiger threat has made the residents of Kalimati-5, 6 and 7 wards as well as the entire municipality unsafe, said Rural Municipality Chairman Dan Bahadur Khatri KC. Stating that no wild animal can be dearer than the lives of the common people, he informed that a letter has been sent to the Division Forest Office, Salyan, requesting a recommendation to kill the tiger.

District Police DSP Hem Bahadur KC said that a meeting of the security committee will be held on Thursday to decide whether to kill or control the tiger. He informed that a tiger that attacks the common people while going to cut grass near settlements and in the forest should not be left alone.
