Out of 498 people in Darma Rural Municipality of Salyan, 128 tested positive for scrub typhus.
Four women died in the first week of Asoj and Kartik due to high fever along with symptoms similar to scrub typhus, and the number of fever patients has increased across the municipality. Yagya Bahadur Basnet, head of the rural municipality health department, said that scrub typhus was found in 128 people during two days of camp and five days of door-to-door health check-ups. Of these, scrub typhus was found in 70 percent of women.
He said that 51 people died during the camp conducted in coordination with the health service office, 73 people died during the door-to-door testing in coordination with the provincial government, and four people died during the municipal health institution.
'Although four women died in the first week of Asoj and Kartik due to high fever along with symptoms similar to scrub typhus, no one has lost their lives since those who tested positive have been treated in the village in the past,' Basnet said.
There are still fever patients in the villages. A team of health workers deployed by the provincial government also returned on Sunday. He said that there is a shortage of scrub typhus testing kits. "We have provided some kits to health institutions to test fever patients who have come to health institutions for treatment," he said. "On Sunday, a team has been deployed to some places that were left out for testing. Due to the shortage of kits, the patients will then have to go to the health institutions."
Municipal Chairman Neem Bahadur KC said that scrub typhus has created a serious problem. Although the number of scrub typhus patients has been decreasing recently, the risk remains the same, he said. He urged people to pay special attention to hygiene to avoid infection and to be careful when going to the forest and fields near their homes to mow. He said that a request for the kits will be made to the relevant bodies.
