Vehicular movement will be completely disrupted for 18 days due to road upgrading at two places in the Rukum section of the Mid-Hill Highway.
The road will be closed during this period as road slope needs to be done at two places, Musikot Municipality-8 Kiteni in Rukum West and Sisne Rural Municipality-6 Ranikot in Rukum East.
According to Engineer Navin Kharel of the Mid-Hill Highway Project Office, there is a plan to slope 260 meters in Kiteni and 9 meters in Ranikot from Kartik 2 to 30.
‘Since the road in these two places is narrow and unpaved, it has been decided to make it stronger by making it sloped,’ he said. ‘It would take a lot of time and investment to start widening it immediately, so it has been decided to make the existing road sloped.’
Especially since vehicles from Rukum West to Jajarkot and Dolpa travel to Pokhara-Kathmandu when this section is closed, it has been suggested to use an alternative route that can be used to cross the Garaghat bridge from Musikot and reach Rukumkot via Pipal-Pokhara village and then connect to the mid-hill highway.
Although the transport entrepreneurs requested to postpone the road repair for a few days, Engineer Kharel said that it was not possible, saying that the crowd of people returning to Kathmandu after the festival has increased and that changing the route immediately would be difficult.
‘Although the transport entrepreneurs requested to postpone the work for a few days, it was not possible immediately, so the work will start from tomorrow, considering the weather conditions,’ he said. In this regard, Rukum West Chief District Officer Dinesh Prasad Thani said that no such formal request has been received from transport entrepreneurs.
‘We have not received any request to postpone the road repair work by a few days,’ he said, ‘Since this is also a matter for Rukum East, the work will proceed as per the information. I request all concerned to use alternative routes.’ He said that as an alternative route, vehicles can be driven on the Musikot-Gilbang-Dhape-Nathigadh-Dhaune-Rukumkot route for small vehicles.
