Jumla-based horticultural research center Rajikot has requested permission to recommend two varieties of apple to the National Seed and Quality Control Center, Harihar Bhavan, Lalitpur.
Scientist Rajkumar Giri informed that the recommendation of Topper Red and Red Spur varieties of apple suitable for the climate and geography of Jumla has been prepared. He said, "Even though it has been tested and found to be successful, we have sent it for recommendation." As soon as we get the permission, we will deliver the seedlings to the farmer's doorstep.
Horticulture Research Center had previously recommended apples of Stark Crispon Delicious, Bized N Early and Stark Spur Gold varieties.
This type of apple, which is a plant, begins to bear fruit within two to three years of planting . Apples have properties such as developing color when the fruit is still small, reducing damage during transportation and being able to store for a long time as the peel is thick.
According to scientist Giri, 400 plants can be planted in one hectare of land. Since the plant is small, it is very easy to manage the garden. "Farmers can pick apple seeds easily," he said.
Horticulture Research Center has also developed grafting technology in walnut. The first-time success rate was 40 percent. Now it has reached 72 percent, said scientist Giri . Now, farmers are earning a lot of income by using this technology. Now Rajikot is providing cheap walnut grafted plants.
'Earlier, per seedling was 1,100 rupees,' said scientist Giri, 'Now after the development of this technology, the district rate has been fixed at 500 rupees.'
