Free calcium distribution has been started for pregnant women who come for health check-up at the district hospital in Thuliberi Municipality.

With the financial support of Himalayan Family Health Care and Dolpa Ghar, Prakash Shahi, who is currently living in America, free calcium distribution has been started from today.

Even though the government of Nepal distributes free iron pills to all pregnant women who come for health check-up at local health institutions, they still have to buy calcium.

Doctor Akhand Upadhyay of the district hospital said that free calcium is being distributed in the district by gathering support from donors in the country and abroad.

He said, 'Government only gives iron pills for free, you have to buy calcium, some pregnant women are not in a position to buy calcium and eat it', he says, 'We give them free calcium, which aims to improve the health of the mother and child.' It is said that this will save up to 3000 for a pregnant woman.

Doctors say that iron pills and calcium should be taken three months from the month of pregnancy to three months after delivery, and it strengthens bones and controls blood pressure and cold storage.

Among the eight local levels of the district, Tripurasundari Municipality distributes free calcium by purchasing it from the municipal budget.
