Relatives of 55-year-old Kali Bahadur Budha of Jumla Hima Rural Municipality-4, who died in a car collision last week, closed the Karnali highway for 10 hours on Saturday.

They stopped the transport service for 10 hours near Nagm Bazar near Jumla and Kalikot border of Karnali highway. They have been closing the highway for 10 hours a day for three days. Because of this, passengers traveling from Surkhet, Nepalgunj to Jumla, Mugu and Jumla Mugu to Surkhet Nepalgunj are stranded. Protesters arrive on the streets at 5 am. They open the road only around 4 pm.

On Saturday, the relatives of the deceased stopped the transport service by burning the counter of Midwest Transport, burning tires on the road and barricading it with iron. The deceased old man was hit by a force vehicle of Karnali Province 001 B 0915 near Radio Nepal in Surkhet. The protest has been going on for seven days in Surkhet and for three days in Jumla, demanding proper compensation to the families of the deceased.

Chairman of Andolan Sangharsh Samiti Chhatra Bahadur Shahi said that the street movement will not stop until the demands of the relatives of the deceased are met. Discussions were held with the relatives of the deceased on Tuesday and Wednesday at the Surkhet Police Office, but no conclusion could be reached. According to the police, the driver Tej Thami has been detained by the police. The family is not accepting to identify the body. Himaka Ammaraj Shahi, who is leading the movement in Jumla, said that the street movement will continue until justice is done to the victim's family.

He said, 'The car did not hit. Killed by hitting. The street struggle will not stop until there is a proper investigation and compensation for the relatives of the deceased. ’

Passengers have demanded that arrangements be made to allow them to travel easily, saying that it is becoming uncomfortable to travel due to the continuous closure of the road. Passenger Deepaksingh Dhami said, 'Passengers who arrive early in the morning should stay in Nagm all day and have to travel only in the evening.'

Hima Rural Municipality Chairman Lakshman Bahadur Shahi demanded to arrange compensation for the family of the deceased old man.

The protesting party has warned that all the vehicles of Midwestern transport will be banned from entering Jumla and Mugu. Himavasi said that since the vehicle owners have not come in contact and the Midwest Transport Committee is reluctant to address the demands of the victims, the nature of the protest will become more intense. Locals said that the shutdown will have a lot of impact as tourists will visit Karnali this season.
