The 30 kg rice distribution program given during birth and death funerals in Jumla is becoming effective. The government decided to provide rice subsidy to the local residents of five districts of Karnali on 23 August 2073.
In the beginning, 20 kg of rice was distributed. From the financial year 2081-82, the government has increased the quantity of rice to 30 kg.
Santosh Tiwari, head of the branch office of Food Management and Trade Company Limited at Khalanga, Jumla headquarters, said, '30 kg of rice has been given to reduce the maternal mortality rate in Karnali region. Along with this, arrangements have been made to pay the rent.'
He said that the government has also provided the transportation expenses because the travel expenses are high especially for the citizens of remote rural villages to get rice.
The Food Institute has arranged to provide travel expenses for citizens who come to collect rice. Apart from Chandannath municipality, different fares have also been provided to citizens coming from other municipalities. The head of the office Tiwari informed that the citizens coming from Kankasundari, Sinja, Hima and Tila rural municipalities of the district will be given Rs.
The statistics of the last two financial years show that the citizens of Karnali have actively participated in this scheme. In the financial year 2080/81, 147 quintals of birth and 13 quintals of 20 kg of rice were distributed for deaths. Three lakh 88 thousand 500 rupees have been spent for rent during this period.
This plan, which was started in 2073, has been effective so far. Similarly, the information officer of the Food Institute, Lakshman Sharma, said that the statistics up to December of the financial year 2081-82 show a continuous increase in the effectiveness of the plan. This year, 81.9 percent quintals of rice have been distributed free of charge for births and deaths, while 1 lakh 48 thousand 500 quintals have been provided as rent, according to the branch office of the Food Management and Trade Company Limited here.
