The construction of Nepal's longest three-span suspension bridge has started in Khatang area of Gurbhakot municipality in East Surkhet of Surkhet. The construction of the bridge has been started by establishing the main pillar on Khatang island surrounded by Bheri river and connecting Gurvakot municipality-8, 12 and 12 wards.
Laying the foundation stone of the three-faced bridge, Nepali Congress Vice Chairman and former Deputy Prime Minister Purna Bahadur Khadka said that religious and touristic area Khatang will be the largest religious area in the country. It is considered very religious to turn the river to the north, the Bheri river here has also turned to the north. It is in a very low position,'' he said. He instructed to complete the plan with sufficient budget on time. Gopal Thapa, Engineer of Suspension Bridge Division Pulchok, said that Nepal's longest three-pointed bridge is going to be built in Khatang. He said, "The three-pointed bridge that is being built at this place is the longest of the three-pointed bridges that have been completed and are being built in Nepal." This bridge will be 1.60 meters wide and 654.60 meters long. The height of the tower to be built on Khatang Island will be 25.23 meters. According to Engineer Thapa, Mr. Geeta Construction got the bridge construction work for 21.9 million five thousand 85 rupees. The construction company has completed the foundation construction in Khatang area where the main tower will be built and has accelerated the foundation construction towards Mehalkuna and Dahchaur.
According to the Suspension Bridge Division, 25 pillars with a depth of 22 meters will be constructed in the Khatang area where the main tower will be. Similarly, 14 towers with a depth of 16 meters will be constructed towards Ghumkhare, while RCC foundations will be constructed towards Dahchaur and Mehalkuna. Umang Prabhat Giri, the engineer in charge of the site, said that a three-way bridge was constructed to connect the three villages. A contract was signed with the builders on June 11, 2081 to build the
bridge. Ashok Nath Yogi, a member of the Planning Commission, said that even in the second five-year plan, construction of suspension bridges in places where roads and concrete bridges are not accessible is included in the policy and plan.
