Palungtar Municipality has honored three couples who got married inter-caste. On the occasion of the 21st Caste Discrimination and Untouchability Eradication Day, couples who got married inter-caste were honored on Thursday.
James Koirala and Ganga Lama of Palungtar-1, Sujan Thapa Chhetri and Ranjita Kumal of Ward No. 4, and Baradan Shrestha and Sachin Gurung of Ward No. 4 were honored by the municipality.
The couple who contributed to the campaign of social transformation by getting married inter-caste was honored, said Manoj Sirmal, head of the municipality's education department. He said that couples who got married inter-caste and registered their marriage in the current fiscal year were honored.
‘Although caste discrimination has been legally abolished, there are still some practical difficulties. Today, instead of honoring inter-caste couples, some couples’ photos appear on social media. We are worried that we will be in trouble,’ he said. ‘We have to face social pressure. We have honored them to end this situation.’
Mayor Bivas Chintan and Deputy Mayor Vandana Pandey honored the inter-caste couple by covering them with a dosalla and giving them a bouquet of flowers.’
On Thursday itself, an oratory competition on the theme ‘Role of Students in the Practical Eradication of Caste Discrimination’ was also held on the occasion of Caste Discrimination and Untouchability Eradication Day. 20 students participated in the competition. Prince Giri of United Boarding School came first in the competition.
