Veteran folk singers Maya Gurung and Uma Gurung have filed a complaint with the National Folk and Dohori Geet Foundation Nepal, alleging that a new song has been released by copying the rhythm of their original folk song.
In the petition registered with the foundation's central president Rita Thapa Magar, the singer duo has claimed that the song has been released under the title 'Sukhi Maya' by copying the rhythm of their old song 'Aideu Sukhi, Laideu Pirati'.
According to Maya and Uma, the original song is included in the 'B-side' of the album 'Lamjung Durbar' that was released in the market around 2045/046. The song features the voices of Maya Gurung, Uma Gurung, Krishna Gurung and Nir Gurung. This song was also broadcast on Radio Nepal. Maya's daughter Sangeeta sang the song with them on the program Indreni only 9 months ago.
They are established artists with the song ‘Gaunsaharama Lamjung Durbar’, which won the gold medal in the zonal folk song competition organized by Radio Nepal in 2045. They said that in that year, Maya Gurung and Uma Gurung, along with Yukt Gurung, recorded the song ‘Aideu Sukhi, Laideu Pirati’. Yukt Gurung passed away a decade ago. The singing duo filed a petition with the National Folk and Dohori Song Foundation Nepal on Wednesday, alleging that their original creation was copied and made public without permission.
According to the petition, the original rhythm and structure of the song, which was also broadcast on Radio Nepal, was based on the rhythm of Ramji Khand, who was also the central first vice-president of the foundation. The singing duo expressed their sadness that Raj Gurung, a former central member of the foundation, had made the song titled ‘Sukhi Maya’ public through his YouTube channel. ‘Sukhi Maya’ has the rhythm of Ramji Khand, the lyrics of Bhagirath Chalauneko and the vocals of Raju Gurung and Shantarani Pariyar.
The petitioners have accused the foundation of directly copying the language, rhythm and style of their creation in the song and have demanded an investigation and justice. The petition has been given to Shiva Hamal, head of the foundation’s Department of Deviation and Anomaly Reduction.
Rita Thapa Magar, chairperson of the National Folk and Recitative Song Foundation Nepal, confirmed that the petition has been received and said that both parties will be discussed. ‘The petition has been registered with the organization. Now, the necessary investigation will be conducted after discussing with the concerned parties and then a conclusion will be reached,’ she said.
