Prem Bahadur Basnet, a resident of Hatiya, Galkot Municipality-3, and his wife Amrita, who are currently working in Hong Kong, have contributed Rs. 1.5 million to the campaign to purchase land for the Municipal Hospital. Two years ago, the hospital had appealed for donations due to a lack of budget for land purchase.

The Basnet family provided the amount to the hospital through their father Padam Bahadur and mother Gauri, who live in Galkot. The Basnet family, who did not receive even basic treatment during their time, said that they contributed with the aim of making the village hospital a standard hospital.

After this campaign, Jhapar Bahadur Basnet, a resident of Ward 6, and living in Japan, purchased a mortuary worth Rs. 800,000 and established the hospital. Basnet, who had been worried that he would not be able to come to perform his parents' funeral 26 years ago, said that he contributed this by saying that if someone dies, he can do the funeral after his children come.

The Galkot Society Japan Nayoda sent Rs. 680,000 to the campaign to purchase land for the hospital. Yam Bahadur Khatri of Ward 6 also donated 666,000 rupees alone. Local Khim Bahadur Khadka donated 555,000 rupees. Bhim Kumari Kaucha of Ward 5 donated 555,000 rupees for her children. They said that they have helped the municipality to complete its plan to organize the city hospital. In the two years since this campaign began, locals have collected 279,000 rupees. Out of this amount, about 7 ropanis of land has been purchased with 20 million rupees. The municipality plans to build a state-of-the-art hospital building on this land. With the help of Galkot residents who have gone to Japan, America, Europe and other countries for employment, they have already invested about 50 million rupees in the fields of health, education and ambulance. With this support, the hospital, campus and school have been operating for the past four years. They also support sports activities. From the collected amount, an X-ray machine worth 1.9 million rupees has been purchased. The municipality has also contributed 1.5 million rupees for the hospital. After the mayor, deputy mayor, all ward chairmen and others contributed 100,000 rupees each, the way has been opened to make the hospital systematic. The head of the hospital, Dr. Rajesh Poudel, said that since the land has been managed, a DPR has been prepared to build a state-of-the-art hospital at a cost of 50 million rupees. If the hospital is ready according to this DPR, it will become a state-level hospital.

In 2007 BS, the then Galkote King Bharatbam Malla established a herbal medicine distribution center in the Harichour market here. The same center was made a primary care center. The local level expanded this center and made it a hospital. Since it came into operation as a hospital since Falgun 1, 2079, dozens of services have been added here. Since last Asoj, services such as maternity services including operations, physiotherapy, blood transfusion, dental specialists, video X-rays have been operational here. Every year, highly specialized services including surgeries are provided here by specialist doctors from Pokhara and Kathmandu. The hospital is providing treatment to senior citizens through mobile services in rural settlements.

After the city hospital started providing specialist services, patients from Galkot Municipality, Tarakhola Rural Municipality, Badigad Rural Municipality, Bareng Rural Municipality and Musikot in Gulmi have been receiving services from here. Up to 150 patients have been receiving services daily, Dr. Poudel informed. ‘Despite being a city hospital, we have been able to treat 36,000 patients a year by providing 24-hour service,’ Poudel said. ‘If we expand the service and build a modern building, this number will increase.’

A waiting house has also been built here to accommodate women and their relatives who have come in labor pains. The three-room waiting house has been operational since last Ashoja with an investment of Rs. 1.2 million by the Fairmade Foundation, Nepal Gaza Development Foundation and the municipality. There is free food and accommodation service here while staying at the hospital. From Asoj to Baisakh of the current year, 160 people have taken maternity services at the hospital, and 51 operations have been successful. The Basnet Society of Galkot has built a cold room here at a cost of 2 million. Assistance has been provided in storing medicines and other things here.

According to Khim Bahadur Khadka, Secretary of the Gandaki Province Ministry of Health, Galkot Municipal Hospital is a model hospital in the province. 'If we can build 20 hospitals like Galkot, we can provide easy and reliable health services to 85 municipalities,' Khadka said. 'This hospital has become a model and reliable hospital in the country despite the lack of infrastructure.' According to Khadka, in the last four years, there has been no need to air rescue for maternity services from the Galkot area. Before that, 10 to 15 people had to be rescued from here by helicopter at a cost of lakhs of rupees. He informed that maternal and infant mortality has also come down to zero since the hospital came into operation.
