It has been only seven years since the construction of a steel suspension bridge over Dudiyakhola to connect Bhimpokhara in Kathekhola Rural Municipality-2 and Ward No. 4, Tanggram. Locals were happy when the wooden bridge was replaced by a suspension bridge in Dudiyaghat.
However, due to the problem of vehicle movement due to the high river during the rainy season, the Gandaki Provincial Government recently constructed a motorized bridge in Dudiyaghat at a cost of Rs. 36.222 crore, while the adjacent suspension bridge has become unused. Like in Dudiyaghat, more than 100 suspension bridges have become unused across the district. Due to the expansion of the road network, the use of the footpaths has decreased and the construction of concrete bridges has reduced the use of these suspension bridges.
The provincial government's Ministry of Physical Infrastructure, Urban Development and Transport Management has recently built three concrete bridges in Kathekhola alone. The suspension bridge that was built three years ago in Lamabagar, connecting Binhu, Rural Municipality-6, and Bhimapokhara, Ward No. 2, has fallen into disuse after a concrete bridge costing Rs 3.11 crore was constructed. Tilak Thapa, Vice Chairman of Kathekhola Rural Municipality, said that the suspension bridge, which was once in dire need, fell into disuse due to the concrete bridge.
'In Kathekhola Rural Municipality alone, three concrete bridges have been built in the last three years. Due to the concrete bridge, the nearby suspension bridges have fallen into disuse,' Thapa said. 'Until the concrete bridge was built, passengers used to travel by suspension bridge and vehicles by river. Now that the concrete bridge has been built, the work on the suspension bridge has not been completed. The rural municipality has planned to relocate the suspension bridge to a potential area where it can be used.'
More than a dozen suspension bridges in the Baglung section of the Mid-Hill Pushpalal Highway, where the largest number of concrete bridges have been built, have fallen into disrepair.
After the construction of a bridge on the Giringdikhola on the border of Galkot Municipality-11, Righa and Badigad Rural Municipality, people stopped crossing the suspension bridge nearby. After that, the bridge's beams have rusted.
According to local Naveen Rana, 10 suspension bridges have been displaced due to the construction of a dozen concrete bridges on the Mid-Hill Pushpalal Highway across the district. There are more than 500 suspension bridges in the district.
