After the increase in measles infection in the Dhorpatan area, the Provincial Public Health Office, Baglung, has decided to vaccinate 6,700 children within the municipality against measles.

There is a provision that children within 15 months of birth should be vaccinated against measles according to the age group.  However, it is not certain whether the children here have been vaccinated on time or not and the vaccination will be done after the infection spreads in the village due to various reasons, said the head of the office, Praveen Sharma.

The Ministry of Health and Population is going to support the vaccination against measles here.  The outbreak of measles has been seen in children and adolescents aged 10 to 20 years in the city.  According to Dr. Abhiyan Gautam, Head of the Child Health and Vaccination Branch of the Department of Health Services, many children in Dhorpatan Municipality were confirmed to have measles in tests conducted at the National Public Health Laboratory.

Apart from those who have returned home after treatment, 56 children here still have measles infection.  They are undergoing treatment. Doctors and health workers from Dhaulagiri Hospital and health workers from Burtiwang Hospital have also kept them in isolation and treated them. A team from the World Health Organization has also come here and is conducting research.

According to Gautam, one infected person can infect up to 18 people, so they have to be kept in isolation. Office chief Sharma also said that every effort is being made to prevent the disease. 'Work is being done to prevent the spread of the infection, to treat those infected by keeping them in isolation and to vaccinate them to eradicate the disease,' Sharma said. 'A campaign to eradicate measles and rubella is being conducted within this year.' He said that since the disease was detected during the campaign, further studies and research can be done in the treatment and prevention campaign and treatment can also be done.

After the Gandaki Province government sent beds, equipment and medicines for isolation, it has become possible to treat patients in Burtiwang Hospital and villages. It is said that the test reports of 14 more patients are yet to come. Due to the increase in measles infection, Dhorpatan Municipality has closed schools from Monday to Friday and scheduled vaccinations, said Bhumishwar Sharma, head of the municipal health department.

He said that 7,000 vaccines have been ordered with the aim of vaccinating 3,689 students studying in grades 6 to 12, those in the 16 to 19 age group and those who have left school in between. 'Schools have been dismissed until Friday to prepare for the vaccination, we have sent a notice to the parents to bring their children to school for vaccination on Friday,' Sharma said. 'Even now, 3 to 4 patients are being added daily, so it is not possible to operate classes without making the treatment effective.' Health workers will also go door to door to vaccinate children left in the community on Saturday and Sunday. According to him, 2 new patients were added on Wednesday too.
