Landslide prevention plan launched on the Myagdi section of the Beni-Jomsom road

What you should know

Construction of a landslide prevention plan has begun on the Myagdi section of the Kaligandaki Corridor connecting China and India, and the Beni-Jomsom-Korla road.

The Beni-Jomsom-Korla Road Planning Office has started preparing a plan to prevent landslides and river erosion on the road at a cost of Rs 250 million. Landslides and erosion have been causing problems in regular traffic operations on the road. The construction company that has signed the contract has been mobilized with the goal of completing it within the current fiscal year, said Bahadur Shah, Sub-Engineer of the Planning Office.

According to him, the landslide and erosion prevention plan has been implemented in the Lower and Upper Baisari, Nagdhunga, Guithebhir, Khambhitta, Latokhola, Rupse, Setokhola and Larjung sections of Raghuganga Rural Municipality-2. Shah said that landslide prevention is being carried out using 'rock anchoring', 'palm wall', 'bioengineering', and 'thidimesh' technologies.

Bamti/Konda/Tista JV has been awarded a contract of Rs 70 million for landslide prevention in a 300-meter area of Khambhitta area of Dana in Annapurna Rural Municipality-3.

GSPL/Buddhisara JV has signed a contract worth Rs 90 million for landslide prevention of a 300-meter stretch of road in Guithebhir of Annapurna-3. Gajendra Nirman Sewa has won a contract worth Rs 70 million for landslide prevention of Latokhola, Rupse, Nagdhunga, Setokhola sections.

The slope has been completed for a distance of 160 meters in the Rupse section. The work of preventing landslides and widening by doing 'rock anchoring' in Latokhola has reached the final stage. GSI/Hutairaj JV has taken a contract worth Rs 20 million to prevent landslides in Lower and Upper Baisari. The road has been widened towards the dill by 'drilling' the hill under the road, placing rods, making a concrete base and building a concrete wall. A hole has been made to place iron rods for 'rock anchoring'.

The 3.5-meter-wide road where the ‘rock anchoring’ is to be done currently only allows one-way traffic. It has been widened to seven to eight meters to allow two-way traffic. A structure is being built to drain water from drains, creeks and roads using hume pipes.

Ramesh Purja, Ward Chairman of Annapurna Rural Municipality-3 Dana, said that after the landslide is prevented, it is expected that vehicle movement on the road will be smooth and vulnerable settlements and public structures will be protected.
