Construction of a settlement protection plan has begun in Singa Tatopani, Beni Municipality-4, which is at risk of erosion and flooding from the Myagdi River.

The Water Resources and Irrigation Management Project Office, Pokhara, has started the construction of concrete structures to prevent floods and erosion on the banks of the Myagdi River in Masartol, Singa Tatopani. Narjung Gurung, an engineer at the office, said that the construction company that signed the contract was mobilized in the work area after the water level in the river decreased due to the onset of winter. The foundation has been dug for the construction of a wall using the 'composite' technology in the risky area by 'diverting' the Myagdi River.

A 102-meter-long, four-meter-wide, three-meter-high concrete wall and a gabion wall on top of it will be constructed. A contract agreement has been signed with RRC/JEM JV for the construction of the project, which is estimated to cost 36.886 million four hundred and eighty-six crores.

Ramchandra Karki, a representative of the construction company, said that the project, which has a contract period of 20 Ashar 2083, has been managed with the aim of completing the project within the stipulated time.

The flood in the Myagdi River in 2078 caused erosion in Faparkhet and Masar in Tatopani. Two houses were destroyed in Masar. Saraswati Secondary School in Faparkhet, the building of the Jwalamai Bhagwati Ama Group, and 17 houses in Masar are at risk of river erosion.

Upper Tatopani Bazaar, home to about 100 households, is also at risk of river erosion. Ward Chairman Ana Bahadur Khadka said that while the river was previously controlled by building gabion walls, the construction of concrete walls has started since last year. Tatopani, known as a natural healing place, is also a major tourist destination in Myagdi.

In the last fiscal year 2081/82, the Irrigation and Water Resources Management Project Pokhara and the Water Resources, Irrigation and Drinking Water Division Office constructed concrete walls at different places on the banks of the Myagdi River from the budget allocated by the federal and provincial governments.

Last year, a 66-meter-long composite technology wall was constructed in the area above (behind Saraswati Secondary School) from the federal government budget, which was planned for this year. A 40-meter-long palisade, share and gabion wall was constructed behind the Upper Tatopani Bazaar from the provincial government budget. This year, additional structures for river control have been constructed in the same area from the budget allocated by the provincial government.
