Lamjung Police have arrested a young man on charges of extorting money from various agencies by pretending to be an employee of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
The arrested person is Sujan Silwal, 25, a resident of Khairhani Municipality-13, Chitwan, who has been moving around in various places, according to the District Police Office, Lamjung.
According to the police, Silwal had been visiting various ward offices, agricultural firms and schools in Lamjung with other associates for the past few days, claiming to be an employee of the UNDP. The police were mobilized based on a confidential information that he was defrauding by collecting application and copy service fees, fees and other amounts on the pretext of providing assistance in the education, health and agriculture sectors.
According to DSP Resham Bohara, Chief of the District Police Office, during a search operation, he was found in a suspicious condition in Dordi Rural Municipality-4 on the evening of Poush 18 and was taken into custody. Various applications written for assistance to the United Nations Nepal and physical infrastructure development, documents prepared in the name of the ward office and school, firm registration certificates of various individuals, permanent account number (PAN) registration certificates, copies of citizenship certificates, and cash collected through fraud have been recovered from him.
The police have said that they are conducting necessary investigations after extending the remand of the Lamjung District Court for 5 days on Sunday for fraud-related offenses. Preliminary investigations have revealed that Silwal used one person as an assistant by tempting him to get a job at the UNDP and also rented a vehicle and traveled with a driver.
The police have also urged other individuals or organizations who have fallen victim to this type of fraud to contact the office with the necessary evidence.
