Locals gain employment after Korala border checkpoint opens

What you should know

Locals of Upper Mustang have been employed for two years after the Nepal-China Northern Korala border crossing became fully operational. Upper Mustangis are operating businesses in the Dasgaja area on the Nepal side of the Korala border crossing and in the Liji Bazaar on the China side of Korala.

This border was opened on Kartik 27, 2080. Before that, the citizens of Upper Mustang were limited to agriculture, animal husbandry and household chores. The border was opened only for the citizens of Upper Mustang, but the government fully opened it as an international trade route on Bhadra 30.

Lindup Gurung, a local of Lomanthang-2 Kimling, is doing business by setting up tents at the Korala border. He says that when the border was not opened, Gurungs who were limited to agriculture and animal husbandry started doing business by putting agriculture and animal husbandry on hold. Most of the 80/90 people who trade here by setting up tents have now gone down to the valley to escape the winter.

This border is located at an altitude of 4,610 meters above sea level. It is said that even if the touristic excitement at the border decreases due to the cold, the border will not be closed. Those who trade at the border have made internal rules to run their business internally. There is an agreement to trade in turns to sell Chinese products to tourists.

Local businessman Lindup Gurung informed that a rule has been made that two traders can trade for one jeep for those who trade under tarpaulins, and two people can trade for one jeep if four motorcycles arrive.

More than 300 people have operated businesses at the border.  More than 100 youths have been given jobs to load and unload and bring in/out electric vehicles and cargo containers. These youths earn between 5 and 10 thousand rupees daily.
