The students of Sarjan Bahira Residential School in Pokhara Metropolitan City-26 Arghaun have started a protest saying that an innocent student has been framed.
Angry students and parents started protesting against the school administration from Sunday and demanded action against five teachers and staff including the principal. The
incident started on December 14 last year. Vijay Vishwakarma, a student of class 11, was sent to the Kaski police station after calling the police without informing his parents. He was accused of raping a 17-year-old student of the school. Praveen Vishwakarma, Vijay's father, says, "Kaski police called me at 7 in the evening and told me that your son has come to the police station. Come now." He said, "When we ask the school, they say they don't know." I didn't get an answer when I asked who knows if you don't know?
After spending 25 days in the custody of the district police office, Vijay was presented to the district court on January 10. The court sent him to jail for remand. After spending seven months in jail, he gave his class 11 exam and passed. Although samples were collected three times for his DNA test, the report was not submitted to the court.
On July 13th, a dramatic incident took place on the day of court hearing. The accused student herself appeared in the court and gave a statement before the judge. She said, "He is not guilty, he is a different person." Some teachers including the principal of the school forced me to write by saying yes or yes. In fact, it is not guilty.' She gave a statement that some young men forced her while going to Kathmandu with her mother. On the same day around 5-6 pm, Vijay was proved innocent and acquitted.
According to Pravin Vishwakarma, Vijay's father, he had been raising his voice against the school's mismanagement, corruption and irregularity. He also lodged a complaint with the authorities and other government agencies against the irregularities in the school. "My son has been trapped in revenge for my activism," he said angrily. He reminded the headmaster of the incident where the students painted black ink last March and said that it was all under the guise of political access and power. He added, 'I am a simple person, seeing the future of my children, I could not accept all this nonsense, so I was forced to speak. Speaking today, my son has been trapped, tomorrow we are protesting so that the same situation does not happen to other children.
Kisan Tamang, president of the Gandaki Deaf Association, has also made serious allegations against the school administration. According to him, this school, which was established by the association itself in 044 to ensure the future of deaf students, has now become a political playground. "Even when we sent letters several times, the management committee did not give any response," he said with the help of interpreter Anjali Vick, "They also hid the victim girl and made her give a statement under pressure."
According to him, there was political maneuvering in the appointment of Principal Sunil Bhandari. Bhandari was brought in after former principal Anita Sigdel was removed under pressure. When a hearing person is made the principal against the wishes of the students, the sentiments of the deaf students are not understood. He says, "We went to the headmaster's house and told him that deaf people should be kept as teachers, but he did not listen to us." Now we are suffering the consequences of this negligence.' They protested at the ward office and school demanding the removal of principal Sunil Bhandari, assistant principal Savitri Baral Parajuli, teacher Pramila Thakali, hostel staff Uday Bhatt and Dhanmaya Shrestha from the school. Students and parents say that the agitation will not stop until the five people are transferred. Bheshraj Dhakal, a class 12 student who is leading the
movement, said that the future of deaf students is bleak. We deaf people cannot speak, our voices are interpreters. But here innocent friends have been trapped because the interpreters made a mistake," he said in sign language, "Today Vijay is trapped, tomorrow we are afraid that we may also be trapped." He alleged that Vijay was trapped by misinterpreting the girl's sign language by the teachers and staff including the principal before the police and the court.
He demanded the transfer of 5 teaching staff and said, 'This is a deaf school, we don't need a hearing principal. Hearing people have violated the human rights of the deaf by sitting inside the deaf school.' According to the students, due to the negligence of the principal, actions such as publishing results without checking the answer sheets of deaf students, reducing the quality of food and even cheating on scholarships have been done.
Another parent also said that she could not stay silent after seeing the dark future of her child. "I am in a situation where I will die or fight here," she said emotionally, "We have come here from far and wide for the future of our children, but my heart is broken seeing the pain they are suffering here."
Since then, the principal Sunil Bhandari has denied all the allegations against him. He said that all this was a planned move to remove him. "Others may have wanted to be the leader, the movement took place because of them," he said, "I have not done anything to trap anyone or make them say that." He said that the accusations against him were fabricated and challenged him to submit evidence if there was a conspiracy.
Currently, there are 185 students and 33 employees in this school, more than 45 districts are studying in this school. The government has provided housing facilities with scholarships, but students are accused of being greedy even on those scholarships.
