Kaski Jail inmates on sit-in, dissatisfied with appointment of Chowkidars

What you should know

Dissatisfied with the appointment of Chowkidar, the inmates of Kaski Jail have started a sit-in.  Jail information officer Mahendra Bahadur Kunwar informed that the prisoners in 'A' block have been on sit-in since Sunday morning.

There is a peaceful sit-in. The main person is not here. He was taken to the district police office yesterday. Others are sitting," he said.

The prison management department recommended Ajay Gurung to the prison office Kaski on Sunday to make him a chowkidar. Prakash Gurung, another prisoner, disagrees with this decision. 362 out of 366 prisoners in 'A' Block have also sent a letter to the Home Minister Akbar on Monday demanding that Prakash be made a watchman.

Newly appointed watchman Ajay is not able to protect the rights and interests of the prisoners, there is partiality and despotic working style, financial exploitation of the prisoners, good governance is not maintained, Prakash favor prisoners insist. Since the chowkidars were appointed through financial manipulation, they have demanded to investigate that too. The prisoners have mentioned in the letter that they will boycott the new watchman until the demand is met, and they will go on a hunger strike.

The names of Ajay Gurung, Prakash Gurung and Prashant Thapa were recommended from Kaski as Chowkidar for the financial year 082-83. Ajay and Prakash are serving life in prison for duty-related crimes and Prashant for drug-related crimes.

A large number of people are in favor of making Prakash a watchman in the prison. On Sunday, youths who were in favor of making Prakash a chowkidar raised slogans for two hours. The situation calmed down after Ajay and Prakash were taken to the custody of District Police Office Kaski citing reasons of peace and security. Prakash supporters have been on sit-in since Sunday morning.

Kaski Jail has 3 blocks. Among them, there are 366 prisoners in 'A' block, 420 prisoners in 'B' block and 34 prisoners including 2 minors in women's block.
