A bill to recognize Magar and Gurung languages as official working languages in Gandaki province has been passed by the parliament. The state assembly meeting on Tuesday unanimously passed a bill to regulate the use of Magar and Gurung languages as official languages in Gandaki province, and these two languages will be recognized in government work.
The bill will come into effect after being verified by the provincial head and published in the gazette. After that, when the bill is prepared, when the proposal is presented in the cabinet meeting, it has to be translated into both languages and submitted.
Public documents in government offices can be translated and archived, the state gazette can also be published in two languages, Magar and Gurung languages can be studied and taught up to higher education.
In addition to the language of government work, the subject of conducting programs to promote and protect other languages is mentioned in the bill. For that, 30 native languages of Gandaki Province have been included in the schedule after the weekly discussion on the Bill in the Social Development and Agriculture Committee.
On Tuesday, the day the bill was passed, ministers and MPs representing the Magar and Gurung communities attended the parliament meeting in ethnic costumes. According to the census of 078, the population of Gandaki province is 24 lakh 66 thousand 427. Among them, 4 lakh 64 thousand 310 (18.8 percent) belong to Magar and 2 lakh 72 thousand 270 (11 percent) belong to Gurung community.
