Yarsagumba collection has been started in Uchlek and Patan of Mustang. The Conservation Management Committees of Thasang-1 Tukuche, Thasang-2 Kowang and Gharapzhong-4 Jamsom of Mustang have released Yarsagumba collection from this month.

Earlier, the Conservation Management Committee (CMC) under the Annapurna Conservation Area project of the National Nature Conservation Fund had submitted an application to the ACAP office for the grant of Yarsa collection permit.

Based on the same letter, ACAP Jomsom office head Rajesh Gupta informed that ACAP has granted Yarsagumba collection permit to the conservation management committees who have submitted applications to comply with the specified conditions under the conservation regulations.

So far, three Conservation Management Committees of Mustang have taken Yarsa collection permit from ACAP office and other committees are also coming for permission. Yarsagumba, a valuable herb, can be found in Thasang, Gharapzhong and Waragung Muktikshetra Rural Municipality of Mustang and in Uchlek and Patan.

Jeevan Thakali, Chairman of Conservation Management Committee, Kowang, informed that the Yarsa collection has started from the first week of Baisakh in Kowang in Thasang of Mustang and Uchlek in Tukuche and Patan.

Conservation Management Committee Chairman Jeevan Thakali said that a fee of 3,000 to locals and 6,000 to citizens outside the district has been set for the collection of yarsa in Kowangle, Thasang. So far, 22 local people and 100 people from outside the district have taken a total of 122 Yarsa collection permits.

President Thakali says that under the Kowang committee, there is a facility to collect yarsa in half a dozen Patans including Muli Khark, Marchelek. Similarly, Deepsagar Thakali, Secretary of Conservation Area Management Committee Tukuche mentioned that Yarsa collection capital is being distributed in Tukuche of Thasang.

Tukuche committee has been distributing yarsa supplies since May 3, Secretary Thakali informed that so far more than 55 people have gone to the lake to collect yarsa. Secretary Thakali said that the Kowang Committee of Thasang collects a fee of 1,000 to locals and 3,000 to other people.

According to Secretary Thakali, he is entitled to collect yarsa in Marchelek, Bataselek Chiudokharak and Dhampusalek because he has taken supplies from the Tukuche Committee of Thasang. Pawan Gurung, Secretary of Conservation Management Committee Jomsom, informed that yarsa collection has also started in Gharpazhong Rural Municipality of Mustang from Monday.

According to Secretary Gurung, 40 Yarsa collection permits were distributed to 40 people on the first day through the committee with the permission of ECAP. Secretary Gurung mentioned that the Jomsom Conservation Management Committee charges Rs 4,000 for the collection of local curias and Rs 6,000 for those who are not registered.

Secretary Gurung said that the Yarsa collection pass distribution will last for one week. Lakpatsi Gurung, Secretary of Muktinath Conservation Management Committee informed that while yarsagumba collection has started in Thasang and Gharapzhong Rural Municipality of Mustang, yarsagumba collection work has not started in Waragung Muktikshetra Rural Municipality. The Muktinath Committee has not yet taken pre-approval from ACAP for the collection of Yarsa.  Lakpatsi Gurung, secretary of the

committee, informed that a committee meeting will be held soon and a decision will be taken for the distribution of Yarsa collection parts. "Where we start is a bit later than other places, the reason for this is because of the snow in Uchch Lake and Patan," said Secretary Gurung. Last year, the committee gave permission to collect Yarsa from May 1 and this year it may be delayed.

Secretary Gurung informed that the Muktinath Conservation Management Committee charged 2,000 to locals and 7,000 to others last year. Similarly, Yarsa is partially collected in other lakes of Mustang. The committee has the right to spend the Yarsa collection fee collected by the relevant committee with the permission of ACAP for social work. In Mustang, ACAP has given permission to the concerned conservation management committee to collect yarsa in Uchle Lake and Patan till June 15.

The collectors have been warned to coordinate and cooperate with the security agencies to minimize possible security risks and accidents throughout the Yarsa collection period and to make the collectors aware, to prevent poaching and illegal activities for the protection of wild animals and other forest products, to prevent deforestation and to prevent waste pollution in high lakes and Patan. It has been decided that ACAP, Division Forest Office, Conservation Management Committee, Security Agency and local people's representatives will visit the Yarsa collection area regularly and monitor.
