In the Himalayan district of Mustang, 11 tourists have died due to a lake in one year. Since May 2081, nine foreigners and two Nepalese tourists have died in the lake. Inspector Vishal Adhikari, information officer of the district police office, informed that most of the Indian tourists died during the visit to the Muktinath temple and the Mustang.
He said that among the mustangs that came during Muktinath darshan and pilgrimage, five people died in Waragung Muktikshetra-1 Muktinath, five people died in Gharpazhong-4 Jomsom and one person died in Thasang rural municipality-2. Tourists in the age group of 58 to 81 years are among those who died after falling into the lake.
According to the statistics of the District Police Office, two tourists died in May 2081, one in May, two in October, five in October and one in January. A police inspector informed that there was a 63-year-old American citizen who died after falling into the lake.
In 2080, 17 people died due to the lake. The police inspector said that 11 foreigners and 6 Nepali citizens were among the dead. District administration office, security agency, health office, local level, provincial hospital and other concerned agencies have been conducting awareness programs, publicity and pamphlet distribution campaigns related to the problem of lakes and their solutions.
Province Health Office, Gharpazhong and Thasang Rural Municipality have also been alerting the tourists entering Mustang by doing wall painting and wall writing program related to the problem of lake. Traveling from the calm place of Bensi to the high Himalayan region without taking a break, tourists face the problem of getting sick.
The lake begins especially from the height of 3800 meters above the sea level. Bhuvan Chhetri, in-charge of the District Traffic Office, informed that senior citizens, physically challenged and tourists taking medicines for chronic diseases are found to be lagging.
