Under the East-West Pushpalal (Madhyapahari) public road, two kilometers of road construction has been stopped from campus gate located in Sundarbazar Municipality-7 of Lamjung to Khatrithanti.
Out of the total 45 km road in Lamjung under Madhyapahari Lokmarg, two km from Campus Gate to Khatrithanti and 1700 meters from Bhorletar Ranipani Chowk to Midim Khola Bridge have been blocked due to obstruction by locals.
According to Madhyapahari Lokmarg Planning Office, Palungtar Gorkha, the construction was started with the plan to upgrade the road for a long time. Some locals raised the issue of compensation, road width and possible impact and obstructed the construction of the road.
According to the locals, due to the fact that the expansion of the road will affect their property, they are demanding to be compensated properly. Some locals have also put forward a demand to change the design of the road. 'We are not against development, but proper procedure should be followed,' said Ram Prasad Pandit of Sundarbazar. He said that the locals of Sundarbazar market area formed a struggle committee under the coordination of Srichandra Lamichhane and filed a case against the construction of the road up to the Supreme Court. 'Even after two years have passed since the case was filed, the Supreme Court has not issued any order,' he said.
Since then, the locals have been saying that they will allow the construction of the road after the order of the Supreme Court. The deadline for the construction of the road by the contractor company is only two months. Raju Neupane, a local resident, said that they had to suffer due to dust and smoke after the construction of the road was stopped due to the obstruction of the locals.
Ishwar Bahadur Rizal, head of Madhyapahari Lokmarg Planning Office, said that due to the obstruction of some locals, the road construction has been confused. He said that if there are no obstacles from the locals, they are ready to start the work in a week and complete it within two months.
Palungtar Planning Office has informed that the road construction will not proceed until the local dispute is resolved. Chief Rizal stressed that since the main responsibility of solving local disputes is the local level, social workers, local all-party representatives, everyone should sit down and find a solution through discussion.
Chief of Sundarbazar Municipality Krishna Prasad Koirala said that there should be no obstruction in the road construction and said that initiatives are being taken to solve the problem. All the citizens have to suffer because the road is not built. We are taking steps to advance the work by addressing the legitimate demands of the local residents,' he said.
According to Mayor Koirala, discussions are going on between the concerned parties. He informed that efforts are being made to reach an agreement between the local administration, municipal officials, road division office and the affected residents. The residents of Sundarbazar have demanded to start road construction as soon as possible. There is a local demand that there should be no delay in improving the condition of the road, which has been in disrepair for a long time.
