Magar communities across the country are celebrating the 43rd National Magar Unity Day today with various programs. In Nawalparasi (before Bardghat Sustapur), where there is a Magar population, cultural tableau performances and other programs are also being held.
Indra Phal Magar, central member of Nepal Magar Association, said that the District Working Committee of Nepal Magar Association and other groups will organize the program at the municipal level. "On the occasion of Magar Establishment Day, district Magar Sanghs of all districts, city and village-level Magar Sanghs, as well as organizations abroad, are preparing to organize various programs on the occasion of the day," he said.
Bhum Bahadur Rai Magar, district president of Nepal Magar Association, said that the day will play an important role in reviving the folk culture of the Magar community, including Salaijo, Jhyaure, Kauda, which is endangered due to various reasons, and to inform the new generation about the Magar language and cultural, historical aspects, and customs.
This day is being celebrated every year on 15th of February to commemorate the unity of the Magar race to protect its rights and existence and on the occasion of the establishment of the Nepal Magar Association. The first convention of 'Nepal Langhali Parivar Sangh' was held in Tanahun on 14th, 15th and 16th of February 2039 amid the police siege in Panchayat system.
In memory of the same day, February 15 is celebrated as the founding day of the association. This day is also known as Magar Day. The fourth convention of the year 2048 of the The name was changed to 'Nepal Magar Sangh'.
According to the National Census 2078, the population of the Magar community in Nepal is 20 lakh 13 thousand 498. This is 6.9 percent of the total population. On this occasion, all the eight municipalities of Nawalparasi (before Bardghat Susta) have given a public holiday. The municipality issued a separate notification and announced that all the offices under it will be closed today on the occasion of the foundation day of the association.
Gaindakot, Devchuli, Kawasoti, Madhyabindu Municipality and Hupsekot, Vinayi Triveni, Bullingtar and Boudikali Rural Municipality have given public holidays.
According to the National Census 2078, the population of the Magar community in Nawalparasi (before Bardghat Susta) is one hundred thousand three thousand 949. This is 27.49 percent of the total population of the district.
