The Gandaki state government is going to make Gurung and Magar languages the official languages in the state. Minister of Social Development of Gandaki Province, Vindukumar Thapa informed that the process of making the two languages the official language of the state government is underway.
The ministry has collected suggestions regarding making Gurung and Magar languages the official languages in Damauli on Sunday. The government has prepared a bill to make Magar language and Gurung language the language of state government work. Minister Thapa said that based on the same bill, suggestions have been collected by visiting various districts of the province.
Minister Thapa says that by preserving, enhancing and developing the Magar and Gurung languages spoken by the majority of the people in Gandaki Province, the government work is simplified and facilitated, and the people's easy access and assurance to the services provided by the government or public bodies is sought to be enhanced.
Minister Thapa said that the Kathmandu Language Commission has recommended the implementation of Magar and Gurung languages as the official language of the province, which are in the process of completing the bases for determining the language of provincial government work.
According to the proposal of the Ministry of Social Development, Youth and Sports, the Government of Gandaki province has received the theoretical consent for the drafting of the Bill and the draft is in the process of drafting. The government plans to table in the parliament from the upcoming winter session.
Magar community is 18.8 percent and Gurung community is 11 percent in Gandaki province. Within Gandaki province, Magar is the second largest community and Gurung is the fourth largest community.
