Three thousand three hundred and twenty-five years ago, King Shankhadeva of the then Sankhu region built the city by encompassing seven villages rich in architecture. It was named Sankhu. In Newari language it was called Sakva. For a long time, Sankhu city became a place of study for students of architecture.

This city of historical, cultural, archaeological and religious importance has been established as a sightseeing spot for domestic and foreign tourists.

Gradually, modern concrete houses started to be built in place of the original houses here. After the damage caused by the earthquake on 12th Baisakh 2072, the process of building a modern house in Sankhu's originality increased even more. Gradually, the danger of losing the originality of Sankhu city began to increase. Of the eight gates of the city built by Shankhadev, only five are now in existence.

How many ponds were washed away, when many such heritages started to be washed away, the number of domestic and foreign tourists coming to see the originality of this place also started to decrease. Every year from Paush Shukla Purnima to Magh Shukla Purnima, Sriswasthani Madhavnarayan Mela is held in Sankhu's Shalinadi. Millions of religious tourists come but don't go to the original heritage city. When the situation started, the local government decided to organize Shankharapur Sakva Mahotsav.  In a press conference organized by Narpalika in Sankhu to inform about the

festival, Mayor Ramesh Napit said that the festival was organized with the aim of making Sankhu, a city full of original heritage known to the world, where the slums had settled when the Kathmandu Valley was flooded. He said that since 30 to 40 million tourists come to Shalinadi annually, the festival was organized from January 16th to 19th on the occasion of Shalinadi Mela, with the aim of visiting the ancient settlements of the original city.

Mayor Napit said that the municipality is also taking steps to list the city of Sankhu, which consists of Bajrayogini, Shalinadi and ancient settlements, in the World Heritage List. Ward president of Municipal Ward No. 8 Pote Thing Bajrayogini and Manichud said that preparations are being made to hold another festival here in Baisakh.

Mentioning that the Bajrayogini Manichud Festival was held earlier in the financial year 2073/74, he said that preparations are being made for the festival again to promote tourism in that area. Ward president Thing believes that the festival will be an effective way to introduce the ancient monastery in Shankharapur to local and foreign tourists.

Ward President of Municipal Ward No. 7, Bishnu Prasad Shrestha said that the festival will prove to be a blessing for those who do not know the ancient original city of Sankhu and reach Shalinadi every year from Paush Shukla Purnima to Magh Shukla Purnima.
