'Thorgeli Good' produced in Thorga located in Rural Municipality-3 of Ruru area of Gulmi has now been established as a 'brand'. In this area, where sugarcane cultivation has been going on for one and a half hundred years, recently, with the initiative of the rural municipality and the establishment of a sugarcane processing center with the support of various organizations, 'Thorgeli Good' has succeeded in making a distinct identity in the market.
The Good Processing Center operated by Ruru Multi-purpose Cooperative Society Limited started regular production from January 20, 2081. According to the chairman of the cooperative, Bhesraj Gyawali, the industry has sold more than 9,700 kg of goods worth about Rs. 24,60,000 so far. Similarly, five thousand 472 liters of chocolate worth more than Rs 10 lakh 95 thousand and 15 kg of chocolate worth Rs 5 thousand two hundred have been sold.
In the past, a small number of farmers used to cultivate sugarcane on limited land because sugarcane was made using traditional techniques and its use was local. But now, after the establishment of industry with modern machines, sugarcane farmers are happy.
'After the establishment of sugarcane industry, the number of sugarcane farmers is also increasing . Currently, the total number of sugarcane farmers in Ward No. 3 and 4 is around 400, while around 100 farmers are selling sugarcane to the cooperative. Whereas, until 2074, sugarcane cultivation was done on only around 800 plants. According to
cooperative, sugarcane worth Rs. 31 lakh has been purchased since last January. Sugarcane which was bought at Rs 12 per kg in Bari is being processed and is now being sold at Rs 260 per kg. The industry has also given employment to locals. There are currently eight employees working on a monthly salary . Even now, the industry has 50,000 to 55,000 liters of dry stock. A sales manager has been placed in some locations including the local Reedy Bazaar .
In this industry, which was established with the grant support of the rural municipality and the cooperation of Heffer International Nepal and other organizations, modern crusher machines, furnaces and some number of manpower were also brought from Gujarat, India. People were brought from India to construct industrial structures and install machines. According to the manager of
industry, Prakash Thapa, after the number of popular private students in Darsingbas decreased, they were moved to another school and the industry was established using the same physical structure. Currently, the industrial work is being done by local workers and the commercial production is also continuous.
'There is no problem in the crushing capacity, the cooking capacity has increased . There is no problem with packaging and marketing", says Thapa. The industry has also introduced 'frames' (pots to shape chocolates) for chocolate production . Thapa said that there is a plan to gradually increase chocolate production.
The rural municipality has given a subsidy of Rs. Similarly, for the sugarcane promotion program, the Krishi Gyan Kendra gave a grant of Rs. 3 lakh and Heffer International Nepal supported the machinery and technical equipment needed for the industry.
According to Yadu Gyawali, chairman of the rural municipality, along with sugarcane production, the rural municipality has given priority to sugarcane cultivation. According to him, the rural municipality is planning to run programs such as sugarcane seed distribution, organic fertilizer production, and pesticide management with subsidies.
Sugarcane is a cash crop, previously most of the land was barren and sporadic maize cultivation. Now sugarcane is being produced . This is also an effort of the municipality to connect domestic production with enterprise and stop youth migration,'' said Chairman Gyawali, "because it is a quality product, consumers look at its utility rather than price." There is no market problem . There is a plan to make the good into chocolate.
The demand for 'Thorgeli Good' is increasing as it is a local product without adulteration and has organic properties. According to President Gyawali, some high-ranking people have become regular customers of Thorgeli Good. The leader of Nepali Congress Shekhar Koirala bought 10 kilos last time because the gud produced here was good. Former Chief Secretary Leelamani Paudel, Secretary Mahadev Panth and others use his Gud Khudo regularly," said President Gyawali. He said that there is a plan to keep the sugarcane promotion program in the next year's budget as well. He said that the aim of the municipality is to make it a proud project of the municipality by introducing programs such as giving subsidies on seeds and organic fertilizers, and rewarding the farmers who produce sugarcane in large quantities.
