Bagmati has been declared a ‘province free of street-dependent people in need of assistance’. At a ceremony held in Hetauda on Friday, Chief Minister Indra Bahadur Baniya declared the province free of street-dependent people in need of assistance.
He also signed a commitment letter to continue the declaration. Bagmati is the third province to be declared ‘free of street-dependent people in need of assistance’. Previously, Karnali and Gandaki provinces had already been declared as such.
This declaration was made by the Ministry of Social Development of the province in collaboration with Manavsewa Ashram. Ramji Adhikari, president of Manavsewa Ashram, said the program was organized to formally announce the campaign for the management and rehabilitation of people in need of assistance living on the streets throughout the province.
With the aim of making the province free of street-dependent people in need of assistance, Manavsewa Ashram, located at Lamsuredhap, Hetauda Sub-Metropolitan City-9, has been working for 14 years. The ashram, which has established branches in 34 locations across 23 districts, has expanded its services to 10 districts in Bagmati Province, including Makwanpur, Chitwan, Kathmandu, Lalitpur, Bhaktapur, and Dhading.
As of Friday, a total of 911 people—332 women and 579 men—were taking shelter in 10 ashrams in Bagmati, including Hetauda. Manavsewa Ashram, which started from Hetauda, has so far rescued more than 1,700 people from various districts of Bagmati Province. President Adhikari said that some of those rescued have been reunited with their families. Although there was a goal to declare the country ‘free of street-dependent people in need of assistance’ within 2082 BS, President Adhikari said it could not be achieved due to the Genji movement, elections, and other reasons.
There are 250 residents at the Manavsewa Ashram headquarters in Hetauda. The Bagmati Province government provided Manavsewa Ashram with 2.5 million rupees in the current fiscal year and has allocated 20 million rupees for the upcoming fiscal year.
President Adhikari said that Manavsewa Ashram was established with the aim of giving love and care to those who have been displaced from their families for various reasons and are living difficult lives on the streets, and to reintegrate them into their families. He said, “Of those rescued from the streets, we have already reintegrated more than 5,000 elderly people back into their families.”
Since the last fiscal year, the federal government has been providing 3,000 rupees per person per month for the care of those residing at Manavsewa Ashram. President Adhikari said that the amount provided by the government has made it easier to care for those taking shelter.
The ashram has stated that Lumbini will be declared a province free of street-dependent people in need of assistance in the upcoming month of Shrawan, and Koshi Province in Kartik. Karnali Province was declared free of street-dependent people in need of assistance in 2076 BS, and Gandaki Province in 2078 BS.
